It’s easy to upload a CV to LinkedIn – but should you do it?

Hi Jess! Kudos for deciding to invest in a professionally written CV! Once you have your freshly minted document, it’s only natural to want to share it with as many prospective employers as you can, as soon as possible. But before you upload your CV to LinkedIn, there are a few things to consider.

Why your CV doesn’t belong on LinkedIn

LinkedIn has made it very easy to upload your CV and make it part of your LinkedIn profile. While it may be tempting to do this rather than create a full profile – or to do it even if you have already fleshed one out – I suggest that you seriously reconsider. I would be very hesitant to recommend uploading your CV to LinkedIn.

Your contact details become public

There are some privacy concerns with uploading your CV to LinkedIn. While your contact details (e.g. email, phone number, etc.) can be kept private on your LinkedIn profile, they will become public once you upload your CV.

You lose control over your CV

Once your CV is uploaded, you no longer have control over it. Anyone who can view your profile is also able to view, copy, download, use and distribute your CV without your knowledge or consent.

Your job search will no longer be confidential

Posting your CV on LinkedIn will make your job-search intentions quite public. If you’re currently employed, the last thing you want to do is alert your organisation to the fact that you’re job-searching before you’ve secured another job.

You give up the chance to present your ‘best’ CV

CVs – even professionally written ones – work best when they are customised to a particular job advert or employer. When you put your CV on LinkedIn, you’re giving up the opportunity to best present your CV to any HR manager who views it.

It’s redundant

It isn’t particularly helpful to upload your CV to LinkedIn. If your LinkedIn profile is properly filled out, then it should already include the most important bits of information from your CV. Adding your CV is simply redundant. In fact, LinkedIn allows you to paint a more comprehensive picture of yourself, your career experience and ambitions than you can with a standard CV. It would be foolish not to take advantage of these features.

It sends the wrong signal to recruiters

Your intention may be to make your CV available in as many places as possible, but LinkedIn serves different purposes than your average job board. By uploading your CV to LinkedIn, you may inadvertently communicate to employers that you don’t really get how the platform works.

Your time would be better spent building out the sections of your LinkedIn profile, rather than simply using it as a home to store your CV. Click on the following link for tips on how to create the perfect LinkedIn profile for your job search.

How to upload your CV to your LinkedIn profile

If you’d prefer to throw caution to the wind by adding your CV to your LinkedIn profile, I suggest placing it in your ‘Summary’ section:

  1. Log in to LinkedIn and go to your profile.

  1. In the editing window, scroll down past your Name, Headline, Current Position and Summary. At the very bottom is a section called ‘Media’.

  2. Click the ‘Upload’ button and select your CV file, preferably a PDF file format.

  3. Add a Title and Description and then click ‘Apply’. Then, click ‘Save’ to return to your profile.
